The value returned isn't the ID, read the pointer instead and may work.
Also given that a try. Simply printing the value of pointer seems to return null and reading that makes the game crash.

Overkill. You just need to send the .dff name and a pointer (for example a pointer to a var) to 0x004C5940 , and if the model exists, the ID will be written in the pointer.
